FIST/CSIT activity in 2010

FIST/CSIT conducted consultancy work for Aga Khan Foundation Afghanistan

The goal of the consultancy work was to assess current storage methods for Apples and Potatoes, and suggest new designs and improvements to existing storages in Badakhshan and Takhar provinces of Afghanistan.

The FIST/CSIT visited and conducted assessment of current conditions of existing potato and apple storage facilities in Badakhshan and Takhar provinces of Afghanistan (the districts of Shughnan, Shiva, Khash, Ishkashim, Baharak, Faizabad, Taloqan, and Warsag). Our specialists provided recommendations on storage design given the results of conducted assessment and conducted trainings and workshops for AKF-A staff on storage construction and design.

Necessary practical tips were provided on construction and restoration of following storage facilities:

Construction of three potato storage facilities (1 in Takhar, 2 in Badakhshan)
Construction of one apple storage facility (Badakhshan)
Construction of one tomato storage (Takhar)
Restoration of two potato storage facilities (Badakhshan)

Our current projects

Water as a source of change. Support of village infrastructure

in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province

The aim of the project is to support the villagers of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province in Tajikistan in their struggle with access to drinking water. The paradox of the region is the fact that despite the potentially large water resources flowing from the glaciers, the easy availability of drinking water in villages is very limited. This is especially difficult in the winter months. The lack of easily available drinking water may result in health consequences, stops the development of rural areas and the fight against unemployment.

Within the project the following investments are to be completed: installation of solar water pump and construction of two rural water supply systems from remote mountain sources directly to the clusters of houses. Construction of three small greenhouses isa part of the sustainability of the project. Their functioning is not possible without access to a permanent source of clean water.

The legitimacy of the construction of greenhouses is related to the need to ensure income, allowing among other things the maintenance of water supply systems and pumps in harsh natural conditions.

Greenhouses will also contribute to changes in dietary behaviour and increase revenue in the villages.

During the the project we use the expertise of local engineers, experts in the field of innovative mountain infrastructure.

Project activities:

  1. Construction of waterpipe and greenhouse in Khuf village

  1. Construction of waterpipe and greenhouse in Vesavd village

  1. Installation of solar pump fora village wheel and construction of greenhouse in Alichur village

  2. Workshops for peole responsible for the use and maintenance of investments. Establishment of the water fund

  3. Workshops on effective greenhouse products sales techniques

  4. Seminars for youth on sustainable water management and hygiene
